Kwara Doctor suspended for concealing information about patient who died of covid-19

584, Professor Salami Alakija Kazeem

A Senior Consultant with University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Professor Salami Alakija Kazeem, has been suspended by his employer for concealing information about a male patient who died of coronavirus.

The deceased died in the hospital on April 2, a day after he was rushed to the facility by Prof. Salami and his widow with both claiming he suffered food poisoning as a result of spoilt pineapple he took, according to a statement released by the authority of the hospital and signed by its chairman medical advisory committee.

After the death of the 57-year-old, the lid on the mendacity of Prof. Salami and the bereaved wife was blown off by anonymous persons who squealed to the hospital that the deceased and his widow recently travelled to the UK, one of the countries with high risk of coronavirus, the report said.

“Following the patient’s death and released of the corpse to the managing professor(who happens to be his relative) for immediate burial (in accordance with Islamic rites) the hospital management received several anonymous calls disclosing information of recent travels by the patient and his wife to UK and having been on self-isolation on arrival to Ilorin prior to presentation at A&E (on the advice of the Professor who brought him) – Information that was concealed from the frontline medical personnel at first contact in the A&E, an act that the hospital’s management considered highly unethical,” the statement read in part.

Salami is a Professor of Internal Medicine and specialist in Infectious Disease, OrijoReporter was told.

His lapse in judgment has landed him troubled waters with many calling for his head and that of the hospital’s chief medical director.

A thread on the narrative online read: “He (Prof. Salami) lied about the health and traveling status of the deceased to get him admitted by UITH.

“He exposed and compromised the health of quite a number of Resident Doctors and by extension a lot of medical personnel at UITH.

“He equally hid the cause of death of the Deceased and in the process, compromised the health of the Mortuary Workers and the Ambulance Driver that drove the Deceased to Offa

“The Deceased is a Muslim, when his body arrived Offa, he was washed and properly buried in accordance with Islamic rites. I am sure someone is already estimating the number of people that could have contracted this deadly disease just because of lack of integrity, wickedness and irresponsibility of “supposedly two powerful Individuals.

“Our request is simple, Salman and his accomplice, The Chief Medical Doctor of UITH must be relieved of their duties, arrested and prosecuted accordingly. I will pick animals a trillion times over these irresponsible and wicked folks!!!”

The management of the hospital has also struck the disgraced doctor with an indefinite suspension, the letter which was sighted by our correspondent.
