Woman charged with bigamy, allegedly married to two men

A middle-aged woman, Amina Kabir, has appeared before the Jibia Upper Sharia Court, Kastina State, for allegedly being married to two men simultaneously.
Like the common law, bigamy is a crime under the Sharia law operating in Kastina State.

During Amina’s arraignment, the prosecutor told the court that the suspect in 1994 married his first husband, Kabir Mohammed, who lives in Jibia, in Jibia local government area of Kastina State, and about five months ago, she was joined in an unholy matrimony with her second husband, Shamsu Saulawa, a resident of Kastina metropolis.

According to the prosecutor, a friend of Amina, Hindatu, blew the lid off Amina’s marriage to two men during a bitter quarrel they had in the presence of the suspect’s husband over debt.

“My Lord, anytime, she wants to sleep with one of them, she will tell the other that she will be travelling to either Jibiya or Katsina.

‘Her first husband witnessed their quarrel and thought that Hindatu wanted to damage his wife’s reputation, and chose to sue her for defamation.”

Insisting she meant every word she said, Hindatu, who was present in the court told the judge that she was at the two weddings between her friend and the two men and was willing to present her witnesses.

The presiding judge, Alhaji Kabi Bello, adjourned the case till May 9,2016 for further hearing.
