Three times Africa’s footballer of the year, Samuel Eto’o, said odds are stacked against footballers from African countries winning the Ballon d’Or.
The only footballer of African descent to have won the coveted award is George Weah, then an AC Milan striker.
Eto’o who raked up the prestigious Champions League, La Liga and Seria A, however did not win the Ballon d’Or, a fate the Cameroonian ex-international attributed to alleged racial politics and hatred among the Africans in an interview with AFP.
He said: “Why is there this hate between us Africans? Why the misplaced jealousy? If we don’t appreciate one another, others are not going to do it for us,” Eto’o said.
“It’s a shame. If all Africans voted for other Africans, we would have had several awards for the best player.”
