A sociopolitical group, Society for Equity and Justice (SEJ), has warned against extending the suspension of the Chairman of Ward G (Ajao Estate) branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Isolo Local Council Development Area, Chief Lawrence Akanbi.
Akanbi was suspended by the Isolo LCDA chapter of the party for three months for allegedly collecting Christmas rice from People Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives member for Oshodi-Isolo Federal constituency 2, Tony Ewelu.
While the suspension is nearing its completion, there are alleged plans to extend the suspension by the leadership of the party at the State level led by Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, who incidentally is from the same LCDA as Akanbi.
The group, in a release signed by Adelani Adeoye and Mariam Olaide, Chairman and Secretary respectively, stated that Akanbi was unjustly punished initially.
“The rice in question was brought to Akanbi’s residence in his absence. The man reported to the Chairman of the party at the local government level. He ordered that the bags of rice be returned and the man returned the bags of rice to the owner,” the statement said.
SEJ stated that in the interest of justice and equity, having served his suspension, Akanbi should be allowed to return to his post.
“This is a man who won his polling booth in the last election despite being from Ajao Estate where there is a huge Igbo population in the area. Even Ajomale himself lost by as much as 3, 000 votes in his ward,” the statement said.
The group noted further that Akanbi is a victim of caucus supremacy battle which has polarised APC in Isolo and Ejigbo LCDAs.
“This man is being punished because he does not belong to the Crusader Group of Chief Ajomale,” it said.
According to SEJ, the leadership of the party in Isolo LCDA should be called to order, warning that extending the suspension of Akanbi will further polarise the party in Isolo and Ejigbo LCDAs.
“We are therefore calling for the intervention of the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in this matter so that Akanbi will not continue to suffer as a result Show of Power by the Crusader Group,” the group concluded.
