Ekpenyong was relieved of his post on Friday. His sack came to light via a statement released by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh in which the reason advanced for his removal was said to be due to a minor cabinet reshuffling.
Sources familiar with the power play in the state politics said Ekpenyong had the ear of Gov. Udom Emmanuel and was on the side of the governor in the latter’s ongoing cold war with his predecessor, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The ex-commissioner was said to have fallen out publicly with Gov. Emmanuel recently.
Report said that Ekpenyong crossed the line and got Gov. Emmanuel angry at a fence-mending breakfast meeting, which Senator Akpabio led the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District to have with the governor on Thursday.
It was said that at the occasion, Ekpenyong launched a vitriolic attack on the Deputy Governor, Moses Ekpo, and Senator Akpabio to please his principal but his action backfired and landed him trouble with the incumbent.
