Efforts made by some Nigerian dignitaries last weekend to assume the titles of doctors and professors have suffered a setback after the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie labeled the European American University, which gave them the honourary doctorate degree awards in Lagos as fake.
On August 23, at University of Lagos, European American University awarded honourary doctorate, and professorial degrees to some notable Nigerians. Among them were Shade Okoya (pictured), the wife of billionaire business man, Chief Rasaq Okoya, who was conferred with a Doctor of Science, D. Sc (Honorary Causa) in Business Management.
Other recipients were Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, the DG of Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), and APC leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s daughter, Mrs. Shade Tinubu-Ojo.
However, investigation has revealed that there was no university by the name European American University.
The NUC boss described the award as academic corruption, and called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the promoter of the phony university and the award recipients.
His word: “Imagine a university awarding honourary professorship, nowhere in the world will you find such.
“This is an academic corruption and the EFCC should investigate all those involved.”
