The simmering feud between Former Governor of Kwara State, Sen. Bukola Saraki and the Chairman, Federal Character Commission, Prof. Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem got physical last Saturday as thugs believed to be loyal to the latter attacked the former at a function in Ilorin where they both hail from.
Sources told orijoreporter that a Local Government Chairmanship Aspirant in Ilorin West, one Agunbiade invited Sen. Bukola Saraki to an empowerment programme, which he organized at Pakata Area, a constituency of both political gladiators.
They were in the middle of the event, when some thugs invaded the place, hurling stones and other objects at people. They also shot indiscriminately into the air in the direction where the former governor was seated. And like all others in attendance Sen. Saraki managed to swim to safety.
It would be recalled that Prof. Oba, the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin and Sen. Saraki are at loggerheads over 2015 governorship battle in Kwara State. While Prof. Oba has declared his ambition to run for governorship election in 2015 in the state, the current strongman of Kwara’s politics, Sen. Saraki has also made it known that he is strongly against his candidacy.
These conflicting interests pitched them against each other to the point that Sen. Saraki who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology made attempts to thwart Prof. Oba’s reappointment as Federal Character Commission’s chairman in the Senate.
It was gathered that Prof. Oba would have lost his seat but his saving grace was his former student, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim who helped him to find a way around it.
