Former Barcelona star Andres Iniesta has confirmed his retirement from international football following Spain’s ouster by hosts of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Iniesta’s retirement was confirmed on Spanish LaLiga’s verified Twitter handle after Spain’s loss to Russia.
“It was my last match with the Spanish team. It’s just a wonderful stage,” Iniesta was quoted.
The 34-year-old’s last game for Spain was their round of 16 clash against Russia when he came on in the second half.
He appeared in four FIFA World Cups for Spain (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018).
He was the hero for Spain as he scored the winner in their 1-0 win against Holland in the 2010 World Cup final.
Also, he was in the Spanish squad that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
