Senate President Bukola Saraki’s plan defection to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may fall through as report emerged that the leadership of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, has conceded to his conditions of remaining in the party fold.
The Nation quoting a source privy to behind-the-scene account of the recent meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari, some APC governors and the Senate President, said Buhari and the governors felt that planned defection of some political heavyweights in the party to PDP, if allowed to materialize would spell doom for the ruling party in 2019 poll and so all efforts must be made including compromise to thwart it.
The paper said in the light of that during the meeting with Saraki, the latter made some demands which were currently being considered by the party hierarchy insisting that whatever agreed to by all parties must be put in black and white to prevent the party from recanting in the future.
“As part of preventing Saraki’s defection, we may offer him juicy terms including: Automatic return as the President of the Senate in 2019. More consultation and inclusiveness in key decisions henceforth, Mutual Executive-Legislature relationship, revisiting all issues raised by nPDP Caucus which formed the basis of talks in the past few months, reconciling with all aggrieved leaders of nPDP,” the publication quoted the source as saying.
