Rotimi Amaechi’s government suffered a blow on Monday when a cabinet member was forced to resign over allegations that he was involved in several illegal property deals.
Mr. Marshal Uwom, the Commissioner for Housing stepped down amid accusation that he allocated to himself, family and friends several flats of the Rivers State government housing estate at Igbo-Etche in the state.
Mr. Uwom’s departure marked the third big change to the Gov. Amaechi’s cabinet since the latter’s defection to All Progressive Congress.
It came at a time of deep political crisis in Rivers State with bitter feuding between the governor and President Goodluck Jonathan and the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Announcing his resignation at a press conference, Mr. Marshal Uwom, said: “Series of recent developments, especially the decision of my boss, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, to dump the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress formed the basis of my decision to leave the cabinet.
“I am a man that fears God and I am also principled too. I belong to the PDP and cannot continue to remain in the cabinet when my principal has left to join another party.”
