Discus thrower Daisy Osakue, who was born in Italy to Nigerian immigrant parents and was set to represent the country of her birth in the European Athletics Championships next week, has been wounded in the eye when an egg was thrown at her by ‘racist’ attackers in Italy.
The attack on the 22-year-old, who holds Italian citizenship is the latest of at least nine attacks investigated as possible acts of racism,that have taken place since Italy’s anti-migrant government took power, Daily Mail reported.
Asylum-seekers, legal immigrants and others who aren’t ethnic Italians are among the people injured since early June. They include a 13-month-old Roma girl who was shot while she was in her mother’s arms on a Rome street and left partially paralyzed. the British tabloid.
According to it, Daisy, who currently trains and studies criminal justice in the U.S. state of Texas was crossing the road in the northern city of Turin in Italy when she was targeted as she was mistaken for one of the African prostitutes who often work in the area.
Daisy, a sprinter and hurdler, recalling how it all happened, said she saw a car speeding toward her while she was in a crosswalk and dashed to the sidewalk to avoid the vehicle adding that she felt something strike her eye and fell forward.
The injury is said to have cast uncertainty around her participation in European Athletics Championships scheduled for next week.
