Man arraigned for calling Kashamu drug baron on WhatsApp

A member of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Deji Babington-Ashaye was Tuesday arraigned before a chief Magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, for calling a chieftain of the party, Senator Buruji Kashamu, a “drug baron and jail breaker” on Whatsapp.

Babington-Ashaye who allegedly swore at Kashamu on a WhatsApp group known as ‘PDP Match to Victory’, was arraigned after he was arrested by the Police on a misdemeanour breach of peace charge .

According to Sunday Eigbejiale, the prosecuting counsel, Babington-Ashaye ran afoul of the criminal code cap 29 Vol.11 laws of Ogun state of Nigeria 2006, between March 13 and 14 ,2016 at about 2:30pm at Opposite community High School , Ogere, Remo in Ogun State magistrate district when he called Senator Buruji Kashamu a drug baron and jail breaker on a WhatsApp group, ‘PDP March to Victory’, and challenged the senator to go to United States if his claim that he is neither a drug baron nor jail breaker was genuine.
Eigbejiale said the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 249 (d) of the criminal code cap 29 Vol.11 laws of Ogun state of Nigeria 2006.
The accused however pleaded not guilty. He was subsequently granted bail by the Chief Magistrate, Oriyomi Ogunfowora, in the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira with two sureties in the like sum, and adjourned the matter till March 30,2016.
