Inmate ‘converts’ to Islam to escape from Kuje Prison

Two inmates, Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu, who are facing trial for alleged murder escaped from Kuje Prison, by ‘converting’ to Islam and ‘became’ a Muslim, a prison official said.

Ajukwu and Amodu alongside two others (pictured together) were arrested in 2014, and confessed to killing Mrs. Edith Chinedu Aliyu, proprietress of Chelson Group of Schools and Chief Executive Officer of Grant Micro Finance Bank, Gwagwalada, Abuja, after they abducted her, and got about N7m ransom from the deceased’s family.

Mrs. Aliyu’s remains was also buried by the accused in a bush after Yangoji village along Kwali-Lokoja expressway.

However, the duo of Ajukwu and Amodu succeeded in their plot to escape from Kuje Prisons where they were detained.

A prison official who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said Ajukwu ‘converted’ to Islam about two months ago, and joined his fellow inmates who are Muslims in the ongoing fasting(Ramadan).

It was gathered that during Ramadan, the prison regulations are relaxed. Normally, inmates are ordered to retire to their cells at 5.00pm but in the Muslim holy month they are allowed to remain outside till 8.00pm.

This is to avail Muslims opportunity to break their fast and partake in congregational prayers.

But on Friday, Ajukwu and Amodu cashed in on the security lapses occasioned by the relaxation of regulations during Ramadan to escape from the prison between 7.00pm and 8.00pm.

It was further gathered that they escaped through the back around where the prison football pitch is located.
