After eight days of holing up in his Maitama residence to avoid arrest, Senator Dino Melaye surrendered himself to the police on Friday about 3.00pm.

The police had laid siege to the residence and yesterday the Kogi West Senator came out of the building after ill-fated attempt to prevent his arrest through the law court.

Indication emerged that the embattled senator would eventually submit himself following the arrival of Senator Ben Bruce and some lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, alongside his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome at the scene.

And when he came out, he caused a stir as he slumped.

The police in a statement issued later said “Senator Dino Melaye is currently in Police custody for investigation, and subsequently, taken to Police hospital, Abuja for medical attention and he is in stable condition. Investigation into the case of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide against him is on-going. The case will be taken to court on completion of investigation.”

Melaye is to face criminal charges that have to do with alleged attempted homicide. At his instance, his political thugs shot a police officer by the Sergeant Danjuma Saliu who is said to be lying critically wounded in the hospital.
