A final year student killed by a ‘soldier’ he gave a lift, Mohammed Konto Sulum a student of University of Maiduguri was killed last Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

22-year-old Mohammed Konto Sulum, a Physics student was driving a saloon car in the metropolis when a man dressed in an army uniform waved him down, asking him for a ride.

Sources said that Mohammed may have obliged the man due to the 6.00pm curfew that was fast approaching. It was said that on their way the man dressed in army uniform shot him and dragged him out of the car before zooming off.

Reports have it that the ‘soldier’ and a man have both been arrested. They were apprehended at a filling station in Maiduguri where they went to buy fuel in the stolen car.

Father of the deceased, Konto Abba Sulum, who went to Maiduguri from Abuja as a result of the incident, described the killing as sad and despicable.

He said: “He came to Maiduguri to defend his final year thesis but was brutally killed. My son is gone and will never return but I want justice to be done. I don’t want other parents to pass through the pain I am going through.

“My son took the man near Aceta Hotel at Bolori Layout. It was around 6 pm and you know there is curfew in Maiduguri that starts at 7pm. But after entreaties by the man who complained that he was getting late to report at his station, my son offered to help, despite discouragements from his friends. It was while on the way that he shot my son around the by-pass, pushed him out of the vehicle and then zoomed off.

“As God pleases, though he was profusely bleeding, my son did not die immediately as he managed and crawled to where some passersby saw him. They drew the attention of youth vigilantes who picked him. It was while on the way to the hospital that he died.”
