Bus Rapid Transit, popularly called BRT on Monday crushed to death a Basic Four pupil of C & S Primary School, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, Ezekiel Daniel.
The incident happened at Ogolonto Bus Stop, along Ikorodu Road of Lagos State.
A source in whose presence the horror unfolded, said Daniel, aged 13, mistook the signal of the school’s security guard to mean that that the pupils should cross and dashed across the road at around 7.30am when he was struck down by a speeding BRT bus driver and died on the spot.
The vehicle driver reportedly fled the scene for fear of being mobbed. Despite, protest still flared across the area as LASTMA officers took cover also for fear of being attacked.
Shell shocked passers-by, sympathisers, some parents and guardians of C & S Primary School gathered at the scene with some wailing while security operatives scattered across the place to prevent mob action.
The Head of Operations, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lanre Adeyemi, confirmed the incident. Adeyemi blamed the hit-and-run BRT driver for it.
He said, “It was a hit-and-run that occasioned a riot. The police came in and restored calm. We are still expecting the driver of the bus to report himself to the nearest police station for necessary action.”
