Doctor Emmanuel Okolo of Awoyaya Hospital at Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State who is accused of beating a nurse working with the hospital, Dorcas Adeyara, was on Friday arraigned by the police.
The alleged assault which was said to have taken place in the hospital, was brought to light by Dorcas in media interview where she hinted of her intention to press charges against Dr. Okoro.
She made good her threat as the doctor yesterday had his day in court as he was arraigned before an Epe Magistrates’ Court on one-count charge of assault.
Police prosecutor Moses Oyekanmi told the court the accused committed the offence on Wednesday, about 2 am, at
Oyekanmi said 35-year-old Okolo queried Dorcas Adeyara about the state of a patient’s room, and during an argument, he slapped her.
“My Lord, the accused caused bodily injury to the complainant. He slapped her just because she worked for him. He should be punished for it,” he said.
The offence contravenes Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)
After pleading not guilty, Magistrate O. A. Fowowe-Erusiafe admitted him to bail at N50,000.
She ordered that the sureties must be employed, with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State government.
Fowowe-Erusiafe adjourned the case till August 19 for trial.
