Hip-hop artiste Davido has been arrested over the death of his friend, Late Tagbo Umeke, between last Monday night and early hours of Tuesday.
The singer, who also lost two friends, DJ Olu, and Chime Amaechi, in similar fashion was earlier quizzed by the police at the Lion Building at Lagos Island, over Tagbo’s death.
Then, he reportedly maintained the statement he earlier issued while reacting to the social media post of the girlfriend of the deceased, actress, Caroline Danjuma, blaming him for her late boyfriend’s death.
In the statement, Davido said that he had left Shisha Lounge where Tagbo was with other friends for DNA night club from where he was informed about his(Tagbo’s) death.
But while giving an update on the investigation on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, disclosed that preliminary investigation showed that the singer lied, saying late Umeke was rushed to the hospital on David’s instruction.
Edgal explained that interim autopsy report stated that the victim died of suffocation, adding that the police has embarked on a fresh investigation.
“The CCTV footage, which I called for, showed that the deceased was quarrelsome and violent in that meeting. Davido confirmed that he left Shisha Bar without the deceased to DNA Night Club and that he was only informed of the victim’s death at the club.
“However, investigation revealed that Davido’s white Toyota Hilux escort driver, Tunde Usutu, accompanied by one Agbeje Olaoye and one Idris Busari, both Davido’s friends, took the deceased to the General Hospital and abandoned him in his vehicle on the instruction of Davido.
“The CCTV footage at the hospital picked the escort vehicle and the entire activity. The vehicle was recovered from Davido’s residence at 7, Awoshika Street, Lekki Phase 1. This completely debunks Davido’s claim that he did not know how the deceased got to the General Hospital,” the police chief narrated.
Meanwhile, Late DJ Olu’s uncle, Okeowo Olasubomi, has debunked claims his deceased nephew died of drug abuse following reports that substance suspected to be drug was discovered in his(Olu’s) BMW car, where he and Chime were found dead.
Olasubomi said in a statement he released: “In reaction to the rumours making rounds, we appeal to the public to ignore any negative insinuation about our darling son, brother and nephew Oluwagbemiga Abiodun, and we plead that the public allow the dead Rest in Peace.
“We plead that the public should let the family grieve in peace at this time of their great loss.
“As Gbemiga’s uncle, I knew him from childbirth. He has always been a good kid who had a great positive outlook to life.
“He had just gained admission into the University to begin his Master’s programme in the UK and was to resume school Monday Penultimate to his death.
“We hung out several times at the night club and DJ Olu was never drunk nor has he ever behaved in an unruly manner once since he became a matured man.
“He never smoke nor drank. He looked healthy and composed and ate well at all times.
“His dad Dapo Abiodun was very strict with him and never indulged him. Infact, Dapo Abiodun was strict with all of us.
“Gbemiga was an entrepreneur who traded cars and builds customized armored cars himself. No drug addict can do that with such business acumen and strict co-ordination.
“The Police Commissioner should have waited for a certified autopsy report before issuing statements about the dead and our family.
“He had full proper parental upbringing. He was at home the night of his death, and he couldn’t have been doing drugs in his car in his own home.
“He won several business contracts to himself without his dad’s influence which made good profits for him. Gbemiga’s dad is a frontline politician and successful business magnate, so i suspect foul play from detractors and enemies.
“Gbemiga’s dad never condoned indiscipline from his kids and all of us. Gbemiga’s mum chided him always and she is a very strict Christian who discipline her kids also.”
