Dangote suspends tomato paste production over raw material
Dangote Tomato Processing Factory, has suspended its business activities about two months after it came into operation due to the dearth of its major raw material – fresh tomatoes.
“We have fully started operations today and the target is 1,200 metric tons per day.
“We are going to work with the farmers, they can afford to produce more because there’s a processing factory and they don’t have to suffer losses like they did before,” the managing director of Dangote Farms Limited, which runs the plant, Abdulkareem Kaita had told Bloomberg in March.
But about two into operation, the processing firm, which is located at Kadawa Valley in Kano, has suspended its business activities owing to Tuta Absoluta, a leaf mining moth and common tomato pest, which destroyed several tomato farms in the north – a situation that has resulted in scarcity and higher prices for tomatoes.
