The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (retd), has insisted that he cannot wear the uniform of the agency despite pressure mounted on him to start doing so.
Ali talked of his refusal to wear Customs uniform since President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him in 2015 during an interactive session with members senate committee on Customs and Excise on Thursday.
Vanguard reported that a member of the committee, Senator Obinna Ogba took Ali up on his refusal to wear the NCS uniform almost two into his appointment, saying the act highly demoralized officers and men of the front-line revenue generating agency.
“Mr. CG, we want this committee to know the reason you are still in mufti, close to two years after your appointment as the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service.” the paper quoted Senator Ogba as saying.
It said Ali’s response that being a former military officer, the statute of the military does not permits him to wear any other uniform.
The report said the Customs boss’ response infuriated a member of the Committee, Senator Dino Melaye, who according to the report, reminded Ali that a retired General of the Nigerian Army, Halidu Hananiya wore the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) uniform when he was appointed Corp Marshall.
It said Ali countered Dino by submitting that Hananiya made a mistake with that action.
