Former senior national team captain and later coach of the side, Christian Chukwu, has spoken from his sickbed.
Chuckwu who is called ‘Chairman’, a nickname that stuck since his days as a footballer playing central defence, is hospitalised for undisclosed ailment.
His sickness however, has been dogged by controversy with claim and counterclaim about him being abandoned by his employer, Rangers of Enugu.
“I sincerely thank Nigerians for their concern on my health. By the grace of God I’ll be back on my feet. It, however, feels bad that people have created controversy over my health. It doesn’t feel good. I have not been abandoned,” Chukwu said in a statement credited to him.
Recall that he was a member of all conquering Eagles that won the 1980 Nations Cup hosted by Nigeria.
