30-year-old Akpan hails from Ikot Akpan Udo village in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, and is the priest of the village shrine.
The suspect was on Monday paraded by the Akwa Ibom Police Command in Uyo, the Akwa Ibo State capital.
Speaking to newsmen while he was being paraded, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said Akpan and his wife, Blessing, had a bitter quarrel and got into a serious fight during which the wife fled, and relocated to her mother’s house, leaving her daughter behind.
ASP Nwawe explained that the suspect pressured his estranged wife to come and pick up their daughter but to no avail.
His word: “On July 23, the complainant, Blessing, had misunderstanding with the husband, Eno Akpan. In the process the husband beat her up.
“She left the house to her mother’s place, leaving her daughter, the deceased behind.
“The husband asked her to come back home and take the child along, she refused and the husband used machete and inflicted cuts on the back and head of their daughter and she died on the spot.”
However, Akpan denied deliberately killing his daughter. He said he was beating his wife and had wanted to hit her with a machete when she pushed their daughter to it, and the machete landed on the deceased.
