Charcoal seller arraigned for raping 14-yr-old girl

A Charcoal seller, Kayode Olushoton, who allegedly raped a 14 year old girl on Wednesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court Lagos.

Olushoton, 57, who resides at Ebute Elefun in Lagos Island is facing a two count charge bordering on unlawful carnal knowledge and sexual assault, preferred against him by the police.

The prosecutor Sergeant Ajaga Agboko told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on January 31, 2017.

He said that the incident occurred at ‎the resident of the defendant at 12.a.m.

Agboko said that the defendant met the teenage girl, at Sura market area and lured her to his house where he raped her.

The prosecutor said: “It was the screaming of the girl that alerted neighbours in the compound, who came to her rescue. They held the man and invited the police who came to arrest the defendant and took him to the station.

“The girl was later taken to Lagos State General Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment where the doctor examination revealed ‎that the girl has been defiled with severe injury, in her private part,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is punishable under sections 137 and 261 (1), of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

However the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Consequently, Magistrate Mr. Martins Owumi ‎granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.

He ordered that the case file should be duplicated and sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution DPP, for advice.

The defendant was remanded in prison custody pending when he is able to perfect his bail condition.

The case was adjourned to March 6, for mention.
