Banker jailed for stealing N30m from dead customer
A banker with a new generation bank, Olawale Garba, has been jailed for 39 years for stealing N30m from a dead customer.
Arraigned alongside six others in July 2015 for conspiring among themselves to steal over N30 million from the bank account of a deceased customer of a new generation bank where the convict worked, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos State High Court handed down the
judgement on Thursday after the accused had reversed himself by pleading guilty.
The 35-year-old initially pleaded not guilty but later admitted that he got the sum of N477,000 from the deals that totalled over N30 million.
He was charged with four counts of conspiracy and nine counts of stealing before an Ikeja High Court.
Pleading for leniency, the defence counsel, Chief Olanrewaji Ajanaku, told the court that the accused has a young family comprising his wife, aged 27, and two children aged one and three years respectively, adding that his dependants would be deprived of love if he was sent to jail.
Delivering her judgment, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye lambasted the convict’s unbridled greed, and sentenced him to 39 years imprisonment which will run concurrently.
