One-time Private Secretary to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Odia Ofeimun, has said that the late sage was an unbeliever but was converted to Christianity after he married his recently deceased widow, HID Awolowo.
The renowned poet and ex-president, Association of Nigerian Authors, made the disclosure during his visit to Ikenne to condole with the Awolowos over the death of their matriarch in a chat with the media.
“I can say I know a little. First, the most important part of it is that as a young woman, Chief Awolowo met Dideolu and from that moment on, he could not have a relationship with any other woman. And you can ask yourself what kept them together. She was a very religious young woman while he was an agnostic.
“That over the years she managed to turn her husband into a proper Christian and a life-long Christian is one of the great deeds that she performed for Nigeria because every political move that Chief Awolowo made throughout his life was based on a new testament ethic which required that a leader would sacrifice himself for his own people,” said about the deceased couple.
