President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, has given a thinly veiled support to Amasa Firdaus, a student of the Nigerian Law School from the University of Ilorin who was not called to the Nigerian bar by the Body of Benchers on the 12th day of December, 2017 being the day of her call because she insisted on wearing Hijab under her wig at the ceremony.

The incident came to light through an Instagram user who had sympathy for Firdaus alleging she was being denied of her right to freedom of expression and religion.
The post stirred up controversy on social media with dissenting views.
Mahmoud in posts on his twitter handle threw his weight behind Firdaus by sharing stories of his daughter and British-Nigerian lawyer Olufunke Abimbola who received an MBE for promoting diversity in the legal profession.
My Daughter Zubaida Mahmoud at the ceremony admitting her to the New York Bar earlier this year…the controversy here on Hijab is needless.
