Alaafin blames govt. for boxing woes at 78
The federal government has come under Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi’s criticism for allowing the country to lose her glory in boxing.
Nigeria won a total of 23 medals in Olympics, mostly in athletics and boxing.
In celebration of Oba Adeyemi’s 78th birthday, a boxing tournament is being lined up to honour the ex-boxer turned monarch.
In a statement released to newsmen by the Chairman, Organizing Committee for the boxing tournament, Mojeed Okedara, it said Alaafin who spoke through his son, a member of the House of Representatives, Prince Akeem Adeyemi, attributed poor performance of Nigerian boxers at international tournaments to lack of commitment of government to the game.
“I don’t care attitude of government at all levels towards supporting the game of boxing has been responsible for the country’s inability to produce world champions as it was in the past,” Alaafin was quoted in the statement to have said.
