The extended family of the current Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio have started desperate maneuvers to ensure that their interest is continually protected in the aftermath of the 2015 elections when their son would no longer be the governor of the state after serving his mandatory two terms.
Information from sources within the state informed us that the family is bent on having the current Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Emmanuel Udom become the next so that with the result that he would remain a malleable Governor who would pander to every whim and caprice of the family.
According to our sources, members of the family including, Chief Emem Akpabio, a top shot in Shell Petroleum Development Corporation who is widely known as “power behind the throne in the state,” Prince Akpabio, the Personal Assistant to Governor Akpabio and known as “The Mega Prince of Akwa I bom”, Ibanga Akpabio , a two- term Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom, Ekan Akpabio and Nsentim Akapabio have for a while now embarked on regular visitation to the homes of prominent stakeholders in the state to prepare the grounds for the eventual attempt to present Udom as the consensus candidate who would fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party in the coming elections.
According to our sources those who have been visited in this drive include heavyweights in the politics of the state as well as anyone who is perceived to have even the most remote likelihood to contest for the PDP gubernatorial ticket in 2015. The message which they carry to everyone they visit is a request for them to drop their individual ambitions or their support for other candidates and join the train of the Akpabios to produce choice of the Governor’s family.
Although those who spoke to us during the week lament the selfishness of the Akpabio family given “that the governor is bent on imposing himself as the senator to represent the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in 2015” they were afraid that the governor would have his way as there isn’t really any formidable challenge against them at the moment.
Our sources, who all expressed so much bitterness at the attempt of the governor and his family to turn the state into their private property, noted that “Akapabio’s inconsistent promise to the people of the Eket Senatorial District of the state is obviously not borne of any sense of fairness but the fact that he is planning to favour a long time associate of his who he is confident would do his bidding while in office and if we allow that to happen, it will really be sad for the state”
