The Edo State Police Command has declared a Benin, Edo State based business man, Adebayo Tajudeen Akanbi wanted for allegedly practicing same sex relationship with Gabriel Ugala now in Police custody.

The lead on Adebayo’s gay practice was blown open by his partner Gabriel who was arrested at Ekosodin quarters, Benin City, on 26 of January 2018.

Same sex relationship is against Nigerian laws and attracts 14 years imprisonment upon conviction.

Orijo Reporters gathered that Gabriel named Adebayo Akanbi as his long time gay partner during interrogation by the Police in Benin. Multiple Police sources familiar with the case told our correspondent that several implicating love text message exchanges between Adebayo and Gabriel were found on Gabriel’s mobile phone further confirming Gabriel’s confessions to the Police.

Adebayo was consequently declared wanted after he failed to honour Police invitations to clear his name and attempts to arrest him were unsuccessful.

“Our men were tipped off that Gabriel was involved in same sex relationship and when we stormed his love nest in Ekosodin quarters in the state he was caught in the act with another male; that was on the 26th day of January 2018.

“During interrogation he confessed to being gay and named his other male partners. One of them was Adebayo Akanbi. We have declared Adebayo wanted because he refused to honour several invitations to come forward and clear his name. I believe he is currently on the run from the police, but we shall get him and make him face the wrath of the law,“ a Police source told our correspondent in Benin.

Continuing, the Police source added that, “We discovered many love messages between Adebayo and Gabriel on Gabriel’s mobile phone. In fact, that was what gave Adebayo away as a gay. You know that love relationship between two men is against Nigerian law.”

Orijo Reporters further gathered that Matters however took a twist when the family of Gabriel Ugala reacted to the news of his arrest and demanded for the head of Adebayo as they all reason that Adebayo must have enticed Gabriel into this unholy act with financial gains.

It was further learnt that Gabriel’s family, friends and the community’s vigilante boys, with Police security cover, stormed Adebayo’s residence and wrecked massive havoc on his properties when he could not be found.

Our correspondent also learnt that the community vigilante and members of Gabriel’s family swore to harm Adebayo and even kill him if seen anywhere in Nigeria.

When our correspondent visited Adebayo’s residence in Benin, a neighbor confirmed that some youth raided his residence in his absence and destroyed his properties adding that the youths were accompanied by Policemen during the raid.

“I was around when some people, most of them fierce looking youths brandishing cutlass and machetes came looking for Mr. Adebayo. He was not around when they came. He was away in the US at the time. They destroyed properties worth millions of Naira and swore to spill his blood even kill him anywhere they see him. When they were destroying his properties some of our neighbours plead with the Policemen that came with them to restrain the boys but the Police refused our entreaties. Later, one of the Police officers told us that he Mr. Adebayo was a gay man,” one of Adebayo’s neighbours told our correspondent.

When contacted, a spokesman of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Godwin Ebohon stated that “The command will not rest in the fight against gay men and women in the State.  Adebayo is therefore requested to surrender himself, and where he fail to voluntarily come forward to clear his name he will be treated as criminal when we eventually arrest him.”
