63-YEAR-OLD PRY SCHOOL PUPIL INSISTS ON STARTING FROM CLASS ONE

Danjuma Aliyu, the 63-year-old grandfather who recently enrolled at a public primary school in Kaduna State, has said that he was offered the opportunity to start from upper class but turned it down.

Popularly called Sarkin Lambu, the father-of-eight who has 10 grandchildren got enlisted into the Kachia Primary School, Kachia, as a Primary One pupil and sit in the same class with pupils who are of the same age with his grandchildren.

Married to one wife, Sarkin Lambu sits on the bare floor in the class like his other colleagues following the sorry state of affairs in public schools in Kaduna State. SCHOOL BOY

He told Daily Trust that he was motivated to have western education following the introduction of free education by the Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai after his parents denied him the opportunity in the past.

He said “I want to read and write and acquire a university degree.

“The governor promised to offer free education at primary and secondary schools and that gave me much impetus to start schooling at the age of 63 years. I hope to accomplish my aim in life.

“Our parents didn’t allow us to go to schools when we were growing up, to the extent of instructing us to hide whenever officials of the native authority were looking for children of school age. If I had attended schools then, I would have contributed a lot to the society but I hope to do that still.

“The teachers decided that I start from class three but I insisted that I had to start from the beginning like my colleagues.”

Kenya’s Kimani Nganga Maruge is the holder of the oldest man to start school after he won himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records when he started primary school at age of 84 in 2004, after Kenya’s government introduced free primary schooling in 2003.

Two of his 30 grandchildren attended the same school but they were in upper classes.
