The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arrested three policemen on duty post near a bank in the Opebi area of Ikeja, Lagos, for gambling while at work.
The trio’s arrest followed on the heels of a video of them counting Baba Ijebu coupons while on duty. The clip which was posted on social media where it racked up several views with many commenting that the officers were counting money they received as bribe, drew the attention of police authorities.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, was piqued by the video and ordered investigation into the incident.
Oti said, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds on the social media that policemen stationed near Zenith Bank, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos, were seen counting bribe money and smoking.
“Based on the allegation, the CP Lagos ordered their arrest, detention and trial. Meanwhile, preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the men weren’t counting bribes received as alleged, but coupons they collected from a game of gambling they played, aka Baba Ijebu.
“The three policemen have been arrested and are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to reduction in rank or dismissal. It is wrong to engage in such distracting activity while on duty.
“CP Lagos encourages members of the public to always expose, albeit accurately, undisciplined and unprofessional policemen.”
