100 LUTH staff under observation as doctor contracts Lassa fever

Not less than a hundred staff of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, exposed to index case during the treatment of two patients, who died from Lassa fever are currently being monitored, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof Chris Bode said.

Prof. Bode, who confirmed the deaths of the two patients from Lassa Fever at LUTH said a resident doctor contracted the disease in the line of duty while treating the deceased patients.

The CMD said LUTH was working with officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health to curtail the spread of the disease saying human and material resources were being mobilised to the effect.

According to him, “There are adequate materials for containment of the disease while drugs have been made available to treat anyone confirmed with the disease. The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Nigeria has also been contacted.”
